"What lies can we tell in this bio then..."
In a room somewhere in Cornwall, where a scarily youthful Queen hangs suspended in time and the scent of mothballs gathers in your senses, there exists a band that has come to blow the cobwebs right outta town.
Lead Cherry is made up of Cornwall born Jon Hodge, Somerset boy Roger Luxton and northerner Martin Williams, from Leeds. Their personalities seem as different as the places they come from. In fact, they seem like three people you wouldn't expect to drink in the same bar in the same part of town yet somehow they are in a band together and you can bet they have the chemistry to make it work. Jon is the shy, pretty one who could look just as at home in a boy band with his fitted jeans and blonde hair if it weren't for surprising rough with the smooth vocals.
"Most people think I'm an arrogant American when they first meet me" he says. However he is far from arrogant, choosing to keep his post-graduate level education quiet so people don't think he's too pompous. Roger 'Roghard Fuckston' Luxton is as boisterous as Jon is reserved, making him almost the exact opposite. "These two take the pressure off me. They are the pretty ones, I'm the slightly old, slightly overweight, slightly behind the drums one" he says comparing himself to his band mates. However, he seems determined to make sure he's not your typical hidden-behind-the-kit drummer with his energetic thrashing that seems to use up his entire body, a habit of playing barefoot and a slightly worrying love for a fifty year old drum. You sure as hell can't miss him!
Martin is the brooding, mysterious one that every real rock band needs. "Scrawny…but in a sexual way…and tattooed" is Roger's attempt at describing him. He is no doubt destined to be as much of a teenage groupie wannabe's pin up guy as a journalist's worse nightmare. Luckily for the band you don't need to talk much to play the bass, and Martin does that well: rock with a strangely soulful yet melancholic undertone to it.
These individuals come together to create an incredible fusion of Bluesy-punky-rock and everything else in between. Think of them as an AC/DC meets Led Zepellin meets Prince kinda band. Lead Cherry was created after Jon's girlfriend introduced him to her former Fopp colleague Martin. The trio were complete when Jon bumped into old pal Roger who had been lured to Cornwall by false promises of the huge farm parties that everybody talks about yet nobody seems to know anything about. Jon says, "I was going to phone him the week before but I was far too busy. You say you'll do stuff but never get around to it." Now here they are a year later, getting to work on their album and dreaming of a signed up future. Looks like the 'Cherry are here to stay, so what are you waiting for?
- Kimberly TewAn aural tsunami of classic riffs from the guitars and bass of Jon Hodge and Martin Williams, (respectively), and a relentless drummer in the shape of Roger Luxton mean that Lead Cherry are due for a massive future.
Their original songs showcase guitar work that harks back to Hendrix, Zep and Free with vocals from the school of Kravitz and its a blessing to hear such quality vocal harmonies mixed with powerful playing like this, (special mention must go to Mr. Luxton though for a performance second only to the great Bonzo himself - absolutely stunning especially on the one cover in the set, a rare Zep track).
The classic rock power trio is reborn - Long live The Cherry!
-- Lord Itchfield, Cornish Live Gig ReviewImagine the underbelly of Cornwall, sleepy manana lifestyle and the undercurrent of inner city gutsy, "right here, right now" driven tension and you will find Lead Cherry contained somewhere in between the two.
With the laid back, loose and occasionally improvised interpretation of their songs in their live performances that converge a gritty, seedy punk blues rock complete with wailing guitar solos and feisty drumming... its no wonder you can hear the diverse influences that Jon Hodge-Guitar / Vocals, Martin Williams - Bass / Backing Vocals and Roger Luxton - Drums / Percussion bring to the band, from Led Zeppelin, The Who, The White Stripes and lesser known 22 20s, Soledad Brothers and Seasick Steve, you can see how the band merge into the melting pot that is indeed the Lead Cherry sound!
